HEART OF THE CANYON

Venture out of the mainstream and beyond the pavement at the Silver Star Hut, the only backcountry rental in Colorado's La Plata Canyon. Minutes from downtown Durango, the hut is nestled in an expansive aspen grove at the epicenter of Madden, Star, Silver and Deadwood peaks. In the winter the cabin provides an ideal jumping off point for exceptional backcountry skiing. Summer trail access includes everything from legendary riding on the nearby Colorado Trail to hiking on the Madden Creek Trail, which abuts the south side of the property. The hut is happily off the grid, miles from the nearest street light and even further from a Wi-Fi hotspot. Whether it's high adventure or a simple breather from the rat race that you're after, the Star will not disappoint.

FROM HERE

We've spent some of our finest moments wandering in the La Platas. From the Silver Star's front door, you're only a few miles from Kennebec Pass and in striking distance of peaks ranging from Babcock and Burwell to Star and Silver. You're also only a few steps from the La Plata River and multiple trailheads. Endless backcountry and nordic skiing is right out the front door. Have a look.

BOOKING

The Silver Star is available for nightly rental throughout the year. The "hut" sleeps up to 12 people and includes multiple bedrooms, a loft, an expansive dining area, large redwood decks and access to some of the finest backwoods in Colorado. The Silver Star has running water (cold), solar powered lighting and a flush toilet. The Star can be yours for $250/night (two night minimum on weekends).
